Before you begin
To ensure things go smoothly, we recommend you download everything you need before you start the setup process. This includes the latest version of Headway and the Impact download archive and optionally the MailChimp plugin, if you’re planning on having a newsletter signup up (like the demo).
Important: Once you’ve downloaded the Impact (Unzip First).zip file, you will need to extract the archive (unzip), which will give you this:
- Headway Template - Impact 1.0.json
The Headway Template - Impact 1.0.json is the template install file
The layered Sketch source file, which can be used for advanced customizations.
Export of the demo site without WooCommerce.
Export of the demo site with WooCommerce.
Setup the base
Step 1.) Install or backup WordPress
Install a fresh copy of WordPress or create a full backup if you are setting up on an existing site. Always better to be safe than sorry.
Step 2.) Install Headway
Install and activate Headway (if you haven’t already).
Step 3.) Install WooCommerce (optional)
If you’re planning on using WooCommerce with Impact, now would be a good time to install the plugin and go through the setup wizard.
Import the demo content (optional)
If you want your site to be identical to the demo, go ahead and install the demo’s sample content using the WordPress Import tool, which you can find under Tools in the WordPress admin sidebar.
It’s important that you install the sample content before you install the Impact template, if you want the various template assignments to remain intact.
After clicking the Upload file and import button, you will be presented with a screen with the headings, Assign Authors and Import Attachments.
The Assign Authors section lets you select an author to use for the imported content. Select your sites admin username.
The Import Attachments section lets you decide whether file attachments should be imported as well.
Tick this box if you’d like the demo images to be imported.
Install the template
The template can be installed by going to Headway > Templates > Install Template and following the on-screen instructions. Once installed, click on the “Activate” button.
Step 6.) Setup the navigation (if not already)
The last important step, is to assign or create a WordPress menu, to the placeholder in the template. You can do so by going to Appearance > Menus, then tick the box below your selected menu.
See below for an example:
Add some widgets (if not already)
If you didn’t install the full theme demo export, you’ll need to add some widgets to the sidebars in the Appearance -> Widgets page in the WordPress admin.
Step 8.) Customize in the Headway Visual Editor
Make any needed customisations in the Headway Visual Editor. There is some custom css located in Headways editor, but most of the styling should be possible using point and click.
Customizing the Header image on the home page
To change the main hero image on the home page, head over the design mode of the Visual Editor, then right click on the Hero block and select Edit This Instance. That will open the editor properties and allow you to change the background property.
